About Ardith Laverne

“Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in all its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but the striving for such
achievement is in itself part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.” – Albert Einstein, via Alexander Astin

ArdithLaverne.com began as a way for me to document my post-undergrad journey. When I graduated from college, I thought I would be an international marketer, traveling the world as a stand-out business person.

The universe had other plans.

After months of reflection, I decided to leave the corporate world and pursue graduate studies in student affairs. The process took about a year-and-a-half from inception to acceptance at Oregon State University, and that year-and-a-half was full of personal turmoil and joy all at once.

I left my job in April 2010, knowing that I would return to school in the fall. I took two months to travel Europe. There, I met wonderful new friends, reconnected with old friends, and began to fully appreciate the wealth of culture in the world.

“Transitions: Events or nonevents resulting in changed relationships, routines, assumptions, and/or roles” (Evans, Forney, Guido, Patton, & Renn, 2010). [Excerpt from Schlossberg’s Transition Theory]

Graduate school was a pivotal point in my life, and learning and wellness are now my world. I’m still finding that I don’t have the answers to a lot of things, such as, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” However, I’m challenging myself to be unafraid. In September 2012, I committed to CrossFit, and I’ve been making progress since. This blog has since transformed largely into documentation of my growth as a self-proclaimed “average athlete.”

Pairs DLs w/ Nikki J!To put it all succinctly, I strive to help others think critically about their own potential while challenging myself to think that way about me.

“I have spread my dreams under your feet,
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”
– W.B. Yeats

So, I love your writing, have the same theme for my blog (girlinlike.wordpress.com) and I’m applying the the CSSA program at OSU… so I’m researching it via some of your posts. So far so good. Keep up the good writing! (p.s. I knew you probably would appreciate this because, well, it’s networking… folks in student affairs dig networking…)
    Take care,

Loved your story! I’m in the same boat – trying to figure out life a little after graduation and started a blog right after. I’m starting to learn about student affairs and what it means as a career and blown away by this community! Have you completed your program? it sounds interesting!
